Frequently asked questions

Soma is the Greek word for body. Somatics generally refers to practices that work with the body-mind connection. Somatic practitioners use movement techniques to work on the impact of stress, trauma, and emotional states on the physical body. We also recognize that physical techniques can shift the emotional state.

  • Chronic or recurrent pain or stiffness

  • Chronic or recurrent stress

  • Developing increased range of motion

  • Developing increased capacity to cope with stress

  • Reducing the impact of stress on overall health

  • Changing your coping patterns

Developed by Dr. Scott Lyons of The Embody Lab, Somatic Stress Releaseâ„¢ (SSR) is a holistic system to enhance body awareness and increase capacity to holistically discharge stress, blocked emotions, and body tension, as well as relieve stagnated energy while restoring resilience.

We use movement, sound, and discussion to identify places where you feel stuck (physically, mentally, or emotionally) and get them moving again.

Somatic Stress Releaseâ„¢ is recommended for adults who would like to change their patterns of stress response and chronic tension. Each session will work within your abilities and your tolerance for activity and processing.

We will work with any props or equipment that you have on hand.

It is helpful to have some space to move, though many people join from their bedrooms or offices.

These items can be helpful:

  • Pillows or cushions

  • Blankets

  • A wall that you can press or lean against

  • Small, firm ball (lacrosse ball, massage ball, or even a dryer ball)

  • Medium-sized ball that can be held or bounced (playground balls or 10" Pilates balls)

Though Dr. Stephanie is a licensed naturopathic physician, the SSR sessions are meant to focus on points of chronic tension, rather than on medical solutions. She will not review labs or do any other diagnostic work during the session. She will not prescribe any medications. If she believes that your symptoms warrant medical attention, she will refer you to your PCP or another provider for medical care.

Sessions are 1 full hour (60 minutes), and cost $150. Group session prices are also available; see the registration page for more information.

Insurance does not cover SSR sessions.
